How I make my living
As a self-employed contractor with business partners, in my work, I perform many "tasks" that I either have lots of experience on or are attempting for the first time. Many times my existing skills transfer to different job tasks with only some similarities to job tasks of which I'm already familiar. For example, I have lots of experience with normal single phase electrical, but I learned to understand three phase circuits in a short time because I am already familiar with electricity in general. The same goes for electronics. Another example is where I have a lot of experience sweating copper pipes for installing swimming pool equipment, though the use of copper plumbing has become passé for non-commercial installations I'm still skilled in dealing with copper pipe sizes typically between 1.5" to 2" or more for swimming pools. So when I did my first bit of 1" to 1/2" copper plumbing for household plumbing as opposed to pool plumbing, just a bit of research taught me that I needed to use Lead-free solder, that and there are other techniques and specific differences between house and pool plumbing that must be paid attention to. So I am learning all the time. In my business, I wear many hats, and come upon many skills and trades which I must become savvy about. Did you know there is a "right way" and a "wrong way" to handle a shovel? I am a contractor and I might do anything... I'm on the phone, meeting with clients pitching proposals, in the office doing research or delegating tasks between company members, writing up proposals, figuring advertising schemes. In the field I sometimes manage, support, and foreman field crews, carry tools by truck, move trailers, deliver heavy building materials (pallets of stone, brick, cement, etc), deliver heavy equipment (backhoes, Bobcats, etc.), run to the dump/recycle centers to drop off loads of excavated dirt or other demolition materials, pick up laborers, dig ditches, design and install plumbing, design and install electrical, trouble shoot electrical/plumbing, perform leak detection, trouble-shoot electronics (remote systems), trouble-shoot electronically operated swimming pool heaters... and more.
